First Book of Chronicles 5
5. THE TRANSJORDANIAN TRIBES
Reuben
1 Sons of Reuben, first-born of Israel. He was indeed the first-born but, when he violated his father’s couch, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son Israel. The group of Reuben forfeited the birthright
2 because Judah proved more powerful than his brothers-a prince having come from him – with Joseph having the birthright.
3 Sons of Reuben, first-born of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, Carmi.
Joel
4 Sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,
5 Micah his 4 son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son,
6 Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria carried off into exile. He was a prince of the Reubenites.
7 His kinsmen, by clans, grouped according to their kinship: Jeiel, the chief, Zechariah,
8 Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel.
Reuben, having settled at Aroer, spread as far as Nebo and Baal-meon.
9 To the east his lands stretched to the beginning of the desert that ends at the river Euphrates, for he had many herds in the land of Gilead.
10 During the reign of Saul they waged war on the Hagrites; they suffered defeat at their hands and the Hagrites occupied their tents throughout the region east of Gilead.
Gad[*a]
11 The sons of Gad lived next to them, inhabiting the land of Bashan as far as Salecah:
12 Joel, the chief, Shapham second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan.
13 Their kinsmen, by families: Michael, Meshullam, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, Eber: seven.
14 These are the sons of Abihail: Ben-huri, Ben-jaroah, Ben-gilead, Ben-michael, Ben-jeshishai, Ben-jahdo, Ben-buz.
15 Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was head of their family.
16 They had settled in Gilead, in Bashan and its dependencies, as well as throughout the pasturages of Sharon to their furthest limit.
17 They sorted themselves into their various groups in the days of Jotham king of Judah.
18 The sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, the half-tribe of Manasseh, a number of their fighting men, men who carried shield and spear and could handle the bow, men used to warfare, forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty of them fit for service,
19 waged war against the Hagrites, against Jetur, Naphish and Nodab.
20 God came to their help against them, and the Hagrites with all their allies fell into their hands, for they had called on God as they fought, and because they put their trust in him their prayer was heard.
21 They carried off of the Hagrites’ livestock fifty thousand camels, two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, two thousand donkeys and a hundred thousand people,
22 for, God directing the battle, the greater part had been killed. And they settled in what had been Hagrite territory until the exile.
The half-tribe of Manasseh
23 The sons of the half-tribe of Manasseh settled in the country between Bashan and Baal-hermon, Senir and Mount Hermon. They were numerous.
24 These are the heads of their families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, Jahdiel. These were stout fighting men, men of renown, heads of their families.
25 But they were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land whom God had destroyed before them.
26 So the God of Israel roused the hostility of Pul[*b] king of Assyria and of Tiglathpileser king of Assyria. He deported Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, taking them off to Halah near Habor and the river Gozan. They are still there today.
