FRIDAY OF THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT

Advent Week I Purple

First Reading : Isa 29, 17-24

29:17 In a short time, a very short time, shall not Lebanon become fertile land and fertile land turn into forest?

29:18 The deaf, that day, will hear the words of a book and, after shadow and darkness, the eyes of the blind will see.

29:19 But the lowly will rejoice in Yahweh even more and the poorest exult in the Holy One of Israel;

29:20 for tyrants shall be no more, and scoffers vanish, and all be destroyed who are disposed to do evil:

29:21 those who gossip to incriminate others, those who try at the gate to trip the arbitrator and get the upright man’s case dismissed for groundless reasons.

29:22 Therefore Yahweh speaks, the God of the House of Jacob, Abraham’s redeemer: No longer shall Jacob be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale,

29:23 for he shall see what my hands have done in his midst, he shall hold my name holy. They will hallow the Holy One of Jacob, stand in awe of the God of Israel.

29:24 Erring spirits will learn wisdom and murmurers accept instruction.

Psalm : Ps 26

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Of David

26:1 Yahweh, be my judge! I go my way in my innocence, My trust in Yahweh never wavers.

26:2 Test me, Yahweh, and probe me, put me to the trial, loins and heart;

26:3 for your love is before my eyes, and I live my life in loyalty to you.

26:4 No sitting with wastrels for me, no associating with hypocrites;

26:5 I hate the society of evil men, I refuse to sit down with the wicked.

26:6 I wash my hands in innocence and join the procession round your altar,

26:7 singing a hymn of thanksgiving, proclaiming all your wonders.

26:8 I love the house where you live, the place where your glory makes its home.

26:9 Do not let my soul share the fate of sinners, or my life the doom of men of blood,

26:10 men with guilt on their hands, whose right hands are heavy with bribes.

26:11 But I live my life in innocence, redeem me, Yahweh, take pity on me;

26:12 my foot is set on the right path, I bless you, Yahweh, at the Assemblies.

Gospel : Mt 9, 27-31

Cure of two blind men

9:27 As Jesus went on his way two blind men followed him shouting, ‘Take pity on us, Son of David’.

9:28 And when Jesus reached the house the blind men came up with him and he said to them, ‘Do you believe I can do this?’ They said, ‘Sir, we do’.

9:29 Then he touched their eyes saying, ‘Your faith deserves it, so let this be done for you’.

9:30 And their sight returned. Then Jesus sternly warned them, ‘Take care that no one learns about this’.

9:31 But when they had gone, they talked about him all over the countryside.
