FRIDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT, feria or OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Advent Week II Purple

First Reading : Isa 48, 17-19

What Yahweh had intended for Israel

48:17 Thus says Yahweh, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I, Yahweh, your God, teach you what is good for you, I lead you in the way that you must go.

48:18 If only you had been alert to my commandments, your happiness would have been like a river, your integrity like the waves of the sea.

48:19 Your children would have been numbered like the sand, your descendants as many as its grains. Never would your name have been cut off or blotted out before me.

Psalm : Ps 1

R. Whoever follows you, Lord, will have the light of life.

The two ways

1:1 Happy the man who never follows the advice of the wicked, or loiters on the way that sinners take, or sits about with scoffers,

1:2 but finds his pleasure in the Law of Yahweh, and murmurs his law day and night.

1:3 He is like a tree that is planted by water streams, yielding its fruit in season, its leaves never fading;

1:4 It is nothing like this with the wicked, nothing like this! No, these are like chaff blown away by the wind.

1:5 The wicked will not stand firm when Judgement comes, nor sinners when the virtuous assemble.

1:6 For Yahweh takes care of the way the virtuous go, but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Gospel : Mt 11, 16-19

Jesus condemns his contemporaries

11:16 ‘What description can I find for this generation? It is like children shouting to each other as they sit in the market place:

11:17 “We played the pipes for you, and you wouldn’t dance; we sang dirges, and you wouldn’t be mourners”.

11:18 ‘For John came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He is possessed”.

11:19 The Son of Man came, eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners”. Yet wisdom has been proved right by her actions.’
