THURSDAY. SAINT AGATHA

Ordinary Time Week IV Red

First Reading : 1 Kgs 2, 1-4. 10-12

David’s testament. His death

2:1 As David’s life drew to its close he laid this charge on his son Solomon,

2:2 ‘I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong and show yourself a man.

2:3 Observe the injunctions of Yahweh your God, following his ways and keeping his laws, his commandments, his customs and his decrees, as it stands written in the Law of Moses, that so you may be successful in all you do and undertake, so that Yahweh may fulfil the promise he made me,

2:4 If your sons are careful how they behave, and walk loyally before me with all their heart and soul, you shall never lack for a man on the throne of Israel’.

2:10 So David slept with his ancestors and was buried in the Citadel of David.

2:11 David’s reign over Israel lasted forty years: he reigned in Hebron for seven years, and in Jerusalem for thirty-three.

The death of Adonijah

2:12 Solomon was seated upon the throne of David, and his sovereignty was securely established.

Psalm : 1 Chr 29, 10-12

R. Yours, Lord, is the sovereignty.

29:10 In sight of the whole assembly David blessed Yahweh and said: ‘May you be blessed, Yahweh, the God of Israel our ancestor, for ever and for ever!

29:11 Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, the power, splendour, length of days, glory, for all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours. Yours is the sovereignty, Yahweh; you are exalted over all, supreme.

29:12 Riches and honour go before you, you are ruler of all, in your hand lie strength and power; in your hand it is to give greatness and strength to all.

Gospel : Mk 6, 7-13

He made a tour round the villages, teaching.

6:7 Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs giving them authority over the unclean spirits.

6:8 And he instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses.

6:9 They were to wear sandals but, he added, ‘Do not take a spare tunic’.

6:10 And he said to them, ‘If you enter a house anywhere, stay there until you leave the district.

6:11 And if any place does not welcome you and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them.’

6:12 So they set off to preach repentance;

6:13 and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.
