EASTER VIGIL IN THE HOLY NIGHT

Paschal Triduum Week VI White

First Reading : Gen 1, 1 — 2, 2

The first account of the creation[*a]

1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

1:2 Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and God’s spirit hovered over the water.

1:3 God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light.

1:4 God saw that light was good, and God divided light from darkness.

1:5 God called light ‘day’, and darkness he called ‘night’. Evening came and morning came: the first day.

1:6 God said, ‘Let there be a vault[*b] in the waters to divide the waters in two’. And so it was.

1:7 God made the vault, and it divided the waters above the vault from the waters under the vault.

1:8 God called the vault ‘heaven’. Evening came and morning came: the second day.

1:9 God said, ‘Let the waters under heaven come together into a single mass, and let dry land appear’. And so it was.

1:10 God called the dry land ‘earth’ and the mass of waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was good.

1:11 God said, ‘Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees bearing fruit with their seed inside, on the earth’. And so it was.

1:12 The earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seed in their several kinds, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside in their several kinds. God saw that it was good.

1:13 Evening came and morning came: the third day.

1:14 God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to divide day from night, and let them indicate festivals, days and years.

1:15 Let them be lights in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth.’ And so it was.

1:16 God made the two great lights:[*c] the greater light to govern the day, the smaller light to govern the night, and the stars.

1:17 God set them in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth,

1:18 to govern the day and the night and to divide light from darkness. God saw that it was good.

1:19 Evening came and morning came: the fourth day.

1:20 God said, ‘Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth within the vault of heaven’. And so it was.

1:21 God created great sea-serpents and every kind of living creature with which the waters teem, and every kind of winged creature. God saw that it was good.

1:22 God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas; and let the birds multiply upon the earth’.

1:23 Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.

1:24 God said, ‘Let the earth produce every kind of living creature: cattle, reptiles,[*d] and every kind of wild beast’. And so it was.

1:25 God made every kind of wild beast, every kind of cattle, and every kind of land reptile. God saw that it was good.

1:26 God said, ‘Let us[*e] make man[*f] in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth’.

1:27 God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.

1:28 God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all living animals on the earth.’

1:29 God said, ‘See, I give you all the seed-bearing plants that are upon the whole earth, and all the trees with seed-bearing fruit; this shall be your food.

1:30 To all wild beasts, all birds of heaven and all living reptiles on the earth I give all the foliage of plants for food.’ And so it was.

1:31 God saw all he had made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and morning came: the sixth day.

2:1 Thus heaven and earth were completed with all their array.

2:2 On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing.

Psalm : Ps 104 (103)

R// Send forth your Spirit, Lord, and renew the face of the earth.

The glories of creation

104:1 Bless Yahweh, my soul. Yahweh my God, how great you are! Clothed in majesty and glory,

104:2 wrapped in a robe of light! You stretch the heavens out like a tent,

104:3 you build your palace on the waters above; using the clouds as your chariot, you advance on the wings of the wind;

104:4 you use the winds as messengers and fiery flames as servants.

104:5 You fixed the earth on its foundations, unshakeable for ever and ever;

104:6 you wrapped it with the deep as with a robe, the waters overtopping the mountains.

104:7 At your reproof the waters took to flight, they fled at the sound of your thunder,

104:8 cascading over the mountains, into the valleys, down to the reservoir you made for them;

104:9 you imposed the limits they must never cross again, or they would once more flood the land.

104:10 You set springs gushing in ravines, running down between the mountains,

104:11 supplying water for wild animals, attracting the thirsty wild donkeys;

104:12 near there the birds of the air make their nests and sing among the branches.

104:13 From your palace you water the uplands until the ground has had all that your heavens have to offer;

104:14 you make fresh grass grow for cattle and those plants made use of by man, for them to get food from the soil:

104:15 wine to make them cheerful, oil to make them happy and bread to make them strong.

104:16 The trees of Yahweh get rain enough, those cedars of Lebanon he planted;

104:17 here the little birds build their nest and, on the highest branches, the stork has its home.

104:18 For the wild goats there are the mountains, in the crags rock-badgers hide.

104:19 You made the moon to tell the seasons, the sun knows when to set:

104:20 you bring darkness on, night falls, all the forest animals come out:

104:21 savage lions roaring for their prey, claiming their food from God.

104:22 The sun rises, they retire, going back to lie down in their lairs,

104:23 and man goes out to work, and to labour until dusk.

104:24 Yahweh, what variety you have created, arranging everything so wisely! Earth is completely full of things you have made:

104:25 among them vast expanse of ocean, teeming with countless creatures, creatures large and small,

104:26 with the ships going to and fro and Leviathan whom you made to amuse you.

104:27 All creatures depend on you to feed them throughout the year;

104:28 you provide the food they eat, with generous hand you satisfy their hunger.

104:29 You turn your face away, they suffer, you stop their breath, they die and revert to dust.

104:30 You give breath, fresh life begins, you keep renewing the world.

104:31 Glory for ever to Yahweh! May Yahweh find joy in what he creates,

104:32 at whose glance the earth trembles, at whose touch the mountains smoke!

104:33 I mean to sing to Yahweh all my life, I mean to play for my God as long as I live.

104:34 May these reflections of mine give him pleasure, as much as Yahweh gives me!

104:35 May sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked exist no more! Bless Yahweh, my soul.

Psalm variant 2 : Ps 33 (32)

R// The mercy of the Lord fills the earth

Hymn to Providence

33:1 Shout for joy to Yahweh, all virtuous men, praise comes well from upright hearts;

33:2 give thanks to Yahweh on the lyre, play to him on the ten-string harp;

33:3 sing a new song in his honour, play with all your skill as you acclaim[*a] him!

33:4 The word of Yahweh is integrity itself, all he does is done faithfully;

33:5 he loves virtue and justice, Yahweh’s love fills the earth.

33:6 By the word of Yahweh the heavens were made, their whole array by the breath of his mouth;

33:7 he collects the ocean waters as though in a wineskin, he stores the deeps in cellars.

33:8 Let the whole world fear Yahweh, let all who live on earth revere him!

33:9 He spoke, and it was created; he commanded, and there it stood.

33:10 Yahweh thwarts the plans of nations, frustrates the intentions of peoples;

33:11 but Yahweh’s plans hold good for ever, the intentions of his heart from age to age.

33:12 Happy the nation whose God is Yahweh, the people he has chosen for his heritage.

33:13 Yahweh looks down from heaven, he sees the whole human race;

33:14 from where he sits he watches all who live on the earth,

33:15 he who moulds every heart and takes note of all men do.

33:16 A large army will not keep a king safe, nor does the hero escape by his great strength;

33:17 it is delusion to rely on the horse for safety, for all its power, it cannot save.

33:18 But see how the eye of Yahweh is on those who fear him, on those who rely on his love,

33:19 to rescue their souls from death and keep them alive in famine.

33:20 Our soul awaits Yahweh, he is our help and shield;

33:21 our hearts rejoice in him, we trust in his holy name.

33:22 Yahweh, let your love rest on us as our hope has rested in you.

Second Reading : Gen 22, 1-18

The sacrifice of Isaac

22:1 It happened some time later that God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he called. ‘Here I am’ he replied.

22:2 ‘Take your son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah[*a]. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a mountain I will point out to you.’

22:3 Rising early next morning Abraham saddled his ass and took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped food for the burnt offering and started on his journey to the place God had pointed out to him.

22:4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

22:5 Then Abraham said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there; we will worship and come back to you.’

22:6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, loaded it, on Isaac, and carried in his own hands the fire and the knife. Then the two of them set out together.

22:7 Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, ‘Father’ he said. ‘Yes, my son’ he replied. ‘Look,’ he said ‘here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’

22:8 Abraham answered, ‘My son, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering’, Then the two of them went on together.

22:9 When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood.

22:10 Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son.

22:11 But the angel of Yahweh called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied.

22:12 ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’

22:13 Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son.

22:14 Abraham called this place ‘Yahweh provides’, and hence the saying today: On the mountain Yahweh provides.

22:15 The angel of Yahweh called Abraham a second time from heaven.

22:16 ‘I swear by my own self – it is Yahweh who speaks – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son,

22:17 I will shower blessings on you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates[*b] of their enemies.

22:18 All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’

Psalm : Ps 16 (15)

R// Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

Of David

16:1 Look after me, God, I take shelter in you.

16:2 To Yahweh you say, ‘My Lord, you are my fortune, nothing else but you’,

16:3 yet to those pagan deities in the land, ‘My princes, all my pleasure is in you’.

16:4 Their idols teem, after these they run: shall I pour their blood-libations? – not I! Take their names on my lips ? – never!

16:5 Yahweh, my heritage, my cup, you, and you only, hold my lot secure;

16:6 the measuring line marks out delightful places for me, for me the heritage is superb indeed.

16:7 I bless Yahweh, who is my counsellor, and in the night my inmost self instructs me

16:8 I keep Yahweh before me always, for with him at my right hand nothing can shake me.

16:9 So my heart exults, my very soul rejoices, my body, too, will rest securely,

16:10 for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor allow the one you love to see the Pit;

16:11 you will reveal the path of life to me, give me unbounded joy in your presence, and at your right hand everlasting pleasures.

Third Reading : Ex 14, 15 — 15, 1a

The crossing

14:15 Yahweh said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me so? Tell the sons of Israel to march on.

14:16 For yourself, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and part it for the sons of Israel to walk through the sea on dry ground.

14:17 I for my part will make the heart of the Egyptians so stubborn that they will follow them. So shall I win myself glory at the expense of Pharaoh, of all his army, his chariots, his horsemen.

14:18 And when I have won glory for myself, at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and his army, the Egyptians will learn that I am Yahweh.’

14:19 Then the angel of Yahweh, who marched at the front of the army of Israel, changed station and moved to their rear. The pillar of cloud changed station from the front to the rear of them, and remained there.

14:20 It came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the night passed without the armies drawing any closer the whole night long.

14:21 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. Yahweh drove back the sea with a strong easterly wind all night, and he made dry land of the sea. The waters parted

14:22 and the sons of Israel went on dry ground right into the sea, walls of water to right and to left of them.

14:23 The Egyptians gave chase: after them they went, right into the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

14:24 In the morning watch, Yahweh looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and of cloud, and threw the army into confusion.

14:25 He so clogged their chariot wheels that they could scarcely make headway. ‘Let us flee from the Israelites,’ the Egyptians cried ‘Yahweh is fighting for them against the Egyptians!’

14:26 ‘Stretch out your hand over the sea,’ Yahweh said to Moses ‘that the waters may flow back on the Egyptians and their chariots and their horsemen.’

14:27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeing Egyptians marched right into it, and Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the very middle of the sea.

14:28 The returning waters overwhelmed the chariots and the horsemen of Pharaoh’s whole army, which had followed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left.

14:29 But the sons of Israel had marched through the sea on dry ground, walls of water to right and to left of them.

14:30 That day, Yahweh rescued Israel from the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore.

14:31 Israel witnessed the great act that Yahweh had performed against the Egyptians, and the people venerated Yahweh; they put their faith in Yahweh and in Moses, his servant.

Song of victory

15:1 It was then that Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song in honour of Yahweh: ‘Yahweh I sing: he has covered himself in glory, horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.

Psalm : Ex 15, 1-18

R// Let us sing to the Lord; he has covered himself in glory

Song of victory

15:1 It was then that Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song in honour of Yahweh: ‘Yahweh I sing: he has covered himself in glory, horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.

15:2 Yah is my strength, my song, he is my salvation. This is my God, I praise him; the God of my father, I extol him.

15:3 Yahweh is a warrior; Yahweh is his name.

15:4 The chariots and the army of Pharaoh he has hurled into the sea; the pick of his horsemen lie drowned in the Sea of Reeds.

15:5 The depths have closed over them; they have sunk to the bottom like a stone.

15:6 Your right hand, Yahweh, shows majestic in power, your right hand, Yahweh, shatters the enemy.

15:7 So great your splendour, you crush your foes; you unleash your fury, and it devours them like stubble.

15:8 A blast from your nostrils and the waters piled high; the waves stood upright like a dyke; in the heart of the sea the deeps came together.

15:9 “I will give chase and overtake,” the enemy said “I shall share out the spoil, my soul will feast on it; I shall draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.”

15:10 One breath of yours you blew, and the sea closed over them; they sank like lead in the terrible waters.

15:11 Who among the gods is your like, Yahweh? Who is your like, majestic in holiness, terrible in deeds of prowess, worker of wonders?

15:12 You stretched your right hand out, the earth swallowed them!

15:13 By your grace you led the people you redeemed, by your strength you guided them to your holy house.

15:14 Hearing of this, the peoples tremble; pangs seize on the inhabitants of Philistia.

15:15 Edom’s chieftains are now dismayed, the princes of Moab fall to trembling, Canaan’s inhabitants are all unmanned.

15:16 On them fall terror and dread; through the power of your arm they are still as stone as your people pass, Yahweh, as the people pass whom you purchased.

15:17 You will bring them and plant them on the mountain that is your own, the place you have made your dwelling, Yahweh, the sanctuary, Yahweh, prepared by your own hands.

15:18 Yahweh will be king for ever and ever.’

Fourth Reading : Isa 54, 5-14

54:5 For now your creator will be your husband, his name, Yahweh Sabaoth; your redeemer will be ‘the Holy One of Israel, he is called the God of the whole earth.

54:6 Yes, like a forsaken wife, distressed in spirit, Yahweh calls you back. Does a man cast off the wife of his youth? says your God.

54:7 I did forsake you for a brief moment, but with great love will I take you back.

54:8 In excess of anger, for a moment I hid my face from you. But with everlasting love I have taken pity on you, says Yahweh, your redeemer.

54:9 I am now as I was in the days of Noah when I swore that Noah’s waters should never flood the world again. So now I swear concerning my anger with you and the threats I made against you;

54:10 for the mountains may depart, the hills be shaken, but my love for you will never leave you and my covenant of peace with you will never be shaken, says Yahweh who takes pity on you.

The new Jerusalem

54:11 Unhappy creature, storm-tossed, disconsolate, see, I will set your stones on carbuncles and your foundations on sapphires.

54:12 I will make rubies your battlements, your gates crystal, and your entire wall precious stones.

54:13 Your sons will all be taught by Yahweh. The prosperity of your sons will be great.

54:14 You will be founded on integrity; remote from oppression, you will have nothing to fear; remote from terror, it will not approach you.

Psalm : Ps 30 (29)

R// I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.

Of David

30:1 High praise, Yahweh, I give you, for you have helped me up, and not let my enemies gloat over me.

30:2 Yahweh, my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.

30:3 Yahweh, you have brought my soul up from Sheol, of all those who go down to the Pit you have revived me.

30:4 Play music in Yahweh’s honour, you devout, remember his holiness, and praise him.

30:5 His anger lasts a moment, his favour a lifetime; in the evening, a spell of tears, in the morning, shouts of joy.

30:6 In my prosperity, I used to say, ‘Nothing can ever shake me!’

30:7 Your favour, Yahweh, stood me on a peak impregnable; but then you hid your face and I was terrified.

30:8 Yahweh, I call to you, I beg my God to pity me,

30:9 ‘What do you gain by my blood[*a] if I go down to the Pit? Can the dust praise you or proclaim your faithfulness?

30:10 ‘Hear, Yahweh, take pity on me; Yahweh, help me!’

30:11 You have turned my mourning into dancing, you have stripped off my sackcloth and wrapped me in gladness

30:12 and now my heart, silent no longer, will play you music; Yahweh, my God, I will praise you for ever.

Fifth Reading : Isa 55, 1-11

The food of the poor

55:1 Oh, come to the water all you who are thirsty; though you have no money, come! Buy corn without money, and eat, and, at no cost, wine and milk.

55:2 Why spend money on what is not bread, your wages on what fails to satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat and rich food to enjoy.

55:3 Pay attention, come to me; listen, and your soul will live.

The covenant

55:4 See, I have made of you a witness to the peoples, a leader and a master of the nations.

55:5 See, you will summon a nation you never knew, those unknown will come hurrying to you, for the sake of Yahweh your God, of the Holy One of Israel who will glorify you.

The nearness and remoteness of Yahweh

55:6 Seek Yahweh while he is still to be found, call to him while he is still near.

55:7 Let the wicked man abandon his way, the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn back to Yahweh who will take pity on him, to our God who is rich in forgiving;

55:8 for my thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways not your ways – it is Yahweh who speaks.

55:9 Yes, the heavens are as high above earth as my ways are above your ways, my thoughts above your thoughts.

The word of Yahweh cannot fail

55:10 Yes, as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating,

55:11 so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.

Psalm : Isa 12, 2-6

R// With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

12:2 See now, he is the God of my salvation I have trust now and no fear, for Yahweh is my strength, my song, he is my salvation.

12:3 And you will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.

12:4 That day, you will say: Give thanks to Yahweh, call his name aloud. Proclaim his deeds to the people, declare his name sublime.

12:5 Sing of Yahweh, for he has done marvellous things, let them be made known to the whole world.

12:6 Cry out for joy and gladness, you dwellers in Zion, for great in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Sixth Reading : Bar 3, 9-15. 32 — 4, 4

3:4 Almighty Lord, God of Israel, hear the prayer of the dead of Israel,[*a] of the sons of those who have sinned against you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God, hence the disasters that have seized on us.

3:9 Listen, Israel, to commands that bring life; hear, and learn what knowledge means.

3:10 Why, Israel, why are you in the country of your enemies, growing older and older in an alien land,

3:11 sharing defilement with the dead, reckoned with those who go to Sheol?

3:12 Because you have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.

3:13 Had you walked in the way of God, you would have lived in peace for ever.

3:14 Learn where knowledge is, where strength, where understanding, and so learn where length of days is, where life, where the light of the eyes and where peace.

3:15 But who has found out where she lives, who has entered her treasure house?

Psalm : Ps 19 (18)

R// Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.

Of David

19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God, the vault of heaven proclaims his handiwork;

19:2 day discourses of it to day, night to night hands on the knowledge.

19:3 No utterance at all, no speech, no sound that anyone can hear;

19:4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their message to the ends of the world. High above, he pitched a tent for the sun,

19:5 who comes out of his pavilion like a bridegroom, exulting like a hero to run his race.

19:6 He has his rising on the edge of heaven, the end of his course is its furthest edge, and nothing can escape his heat.

19:7 The Law of Yahweh is perfect, new life for the soul; the decree of Yahweh is trustworthy, wisdom for the simple.

19:8 The precepts of Yahweh are upright, joy for the heart; the commandment of Yahweh is clear, light for the eyes.

19:9 The fear of Yahweh is pure, lasting for ever; the judgements of Yahweh are true, righteous, every one,

19:10 more desirable than gold, even than the finest gold; his words are sweeter than honey, even than honey that drips from the comb.

19:11 Thus your servant is formed by them, observance brings great reward.

19:12 But who can detect his own failings? Wash out my hidden faults.

19:13 And from pride preserve your servant, never let it dominate me. So shall I be above reproach, free from grave sin.

19:14 May the words of my mouth always find favour, and the whispering of my heart, in your presence, Yahweh, my Rock, my Redeemer!

Psalm : Ps 42 (41)

R// As the deer longs for running streams, so my soul longs for you, O God

Of the sons of Korah

42:1 As a doe longs for running streams, so longs my soul for you, my God.

42:2 My soul thirsts for God, the God of life; when shall I go to see the face of God?[*a]

42:3 I have no food but tears, day and night; and all day long men say to me, ‘Where is your God?’

42:4 I remember, and my soul melts within me: I am on my way to the wonderful Tent, to the house of God, among cries of joy and praise and an exultant throng.

42:5 Why so downcast, my soul, why do you sigh within me? Put your hope in God: I shall praise him yet, my saviour,

42:6 my God. When my soul is downcast within me, I think of you; from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, of you, humble mountain![*b]

42:7 Deep is calling to deep as your cataracts roar; all your waves, your breakers, have rolled over me.

42:8 In the daytime may Yahweh command his love to come, and by night may his song be on my lips, a prayer to the God of my life!

42:9 Let me say to God my Rock, ‘Why do you forget me? Why must I walk so mournfully, oppressed by the enemy?’

42:10 Nearly breaking my bones my oppressors insult me, as all day long they ask me, ‘Where is your God?’

42:11 Why so downcast, my soul, why do you sigh within me? Put your hope in God: I shall praise him yet, my saviour, my God.

Epistle : Rom 6, 3-11

6:3 You have been taught that when we were baptised in Christ Jesus we were baptised in his death;

6:4 in other words, when we were baptised we went into the tomb with him and joined him in death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might live a new life.

6:5 If in union with Christ we have imitated his death, we shall also imitate him in his resurrection.

6:6 We must realise that our former selves have been crucified with him to destroy this sinful body and to free us from the slavery of sin.

6:7 When a Christian dies, of course, he has finished with sin.

6:8 But we believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life with him:

6:9 Christ, as we know, having been raised from the dead will never die again. Death has no power over him any more.

6:10 When he died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God;

6:11 and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus.

Psalm : Ps 118 (117)

R// R. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Alleluia!

118:1 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his love is everlasting!

118:2 Let the House of Israel say it, ‘His love is everlasting!’

118:3 Let the House of Aaron say it, ‘His love is everlasting!’

118:4 Let those who fear Yahweh say it, ‘His love is everlasting!’

118:5 Hard-pressed, I invoked Yahweh, he heard me and came to my relief.

118:6 With Yahweh on my side, I fear nothing: what can man do to me?

118:7 With Yahweh on my side, best help of all, I can triumph over my enemies.

118:8 I would rather take refuge in Yahweh than rely on men;

118:9 I would rather take refuge in Yahweh than rely on princes.

118:10 The pagans were swarming round me, in the name of Yahweh I cut them down;

118:11 they swarmed round me closer and closer, in the name of Yahweh I cut them down;

118:12 they swarmed round me like bees, they blazed like a thorn-fire, in the name of Yahweh I cut them down.

118:13 I was pressed, pressed, about to fall, but Yahweh came to my help;

118:14 Yahweh is my strength and my song, he has been my saviour.

118:15 Shouts of joy and safety in the tents of the virtuous: Yahweh’s right hand is wreaking havoc,

118:16 Yahweh’s right hand is winning, Yahweh’s right hand is wreaking havoc!

118:17 No, I shall not die, I shall live to recite the deeds of Yahweh;

118:18 though Yahweh has punished me often, he has not abandoned me to Death.

118:19 Open the gates of virtue to me, I will come in and give thanks to Yahweh.

118:20 This is Yahweh’s gateway, through which the virtuous may enter.

118:21 I thank you for having heard me, you have been my saviour.

118:22 It was the stone rejected by the builders that proved to be the keystone;

118:23 this is Yahweh’s doing and it is wonderful to see.

118:24 This is the day made memorable by Yahweh, what immense joy for us!

118:25 Please, Yahweh, please save us. Please, Yahweh, please give us prosperity.

118:26 Blessings on him who comes in the name of Yahweh! We bless you from the house of Yahweh.

118:27 Yahweh is God, he smiles on us. With branches in your hands draw up in procession as far as the horns of the altar,

118:28 You are my God, I give you thanks, I extol you, my God; I give you thanks for having heard me, you have been my saviour.

118:29 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his love is everlasting!

Gospel: Mt 28, 1-10

The empty tomb. The angel’s message

28:1 After the sabbath, and towards dawn on the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala and the other Mary went to visit the sepulchre.

28:2 And all at once there was a violent earthquake, for the angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled away the stone and sat on it.

28:3 His face was like lightning, his robe white as snow.

28:4 The guards were so shaken, so frightened of him, that they were like dead men.

28:5 But the angel spoke; and he said to the women, ‘There is no need for you to be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

28:6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said he would. Come and see the place where he lay,

28:7 then go quickly and tell his disciples, “He has risen from the dead and now he is going before you to Galilee; it is there you will see him”. Now I have told you.’

28:8 Filled with awe and great joy the women came quickly away from the tomb and ran to tell the disciples.

Appearance to the women

28:9 And there, coming to meet them, was Jesus. ‘Greetings’ he said. And the women came up to him and, falling down before him, clasped his feet.

28:10 Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers that they must leave for Galilee; they will see me there’.
