Ordinary Time Week X Green

First Reading : 1 Kgs 17, 1-6

Elijah foretells the drought

17:1 Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead said to Ahab, ‘As Yahweh lives, the God of Israel whom I serve, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years except at my order’.

At the wadi Cherith

17:2 The word of Yahweh came to him,

17:3 ‘Go away from here, go eastwards, and hide yourself in the wadi Cherith which lies east of Jordan.

17:4 You can drink from the stream, and I have ordered the ravens to bring you food there.’

17:5 He did as Yahweh had said; he went and stayed in the wadi Cherith which lies east of Jordan.

17:6 The ravens brought him bread in the morning and meat in the evening, and he quenched his thirst at the stream.

Psalm : Ps 120

R. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Song of Ascents

120:1 When I am in trouble, I call to Yahweh, and he answers me.

120:2 Yahweh, save me from these lying lips and these faithless tongues!

120:3 How will he pay back the false oath? of a faithless tongue

120:4 With war arrows hardened over red-hot charcoal!

120:5 This is worse than a life in Meshech,[*a] or camping in Kedar!

120:6 Too long have I lived among people who hate peace,

120:7 who, when I propose peace, are all for war.

Gospel : Mt 5, 1-12

The Beatitudes

5:1 Seeing the crowds, he went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples.

5:2 Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:

5:3 ‘How happy are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:4 Happy the gentle:[*b] they shall have the earth for their heritage.

5:5 Happy those who mourn: they shall be comforted.

5:6 Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right: they shall be satisfied.

5:7 Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them.

5:8 Happy the pure in heart: they shall see God.

5:9 Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God.

5:10 Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:11 ‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you on my account.

5:12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophets before you. Salt of the earth and light of the world
