THURSDAY OF THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Ordinary Time Week XI Green

First Reading : Sir 48, 1-14

Elijah

48:1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.

48:2 It was he who brought famine on them, and who decimated them in his zeal.

48:3 By the word of the Lord, he shut up the heavens, he also, three times, brought down fire.

48:4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have?-

48:5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol by the word of the Most High;

48:6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;

48:7 hearing reproof on Sinai, and decrees of punishment on Horeb;

48:8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;

48:9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;

48:10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God’s wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts of fathers towards their children,[*a] and to restore the tribes of Jacob,

48:11 Happy shall they be who see you, and those who have fallen asleep in love; for we too will have life.

Elisha

48:12 Elijah was shrouded in the whirlwind, and Elisha was filled with his spirit; throughout his life no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.

48:13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.

48:14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvellous.

Psalm : Ps 97 (96)

R// Rejoice in the Lord, you just.

The triumph of Yahweh

97:1 Yahweh is king! Let earth rejoice, the many isles be glad!

97:2 Cloud and Darkness surround him, Righteousness and Justice support his throne.

97:3 A fire precedes him as he goes, devouring all enemies around him;

97:4 his lightning lights up the world, earth observes and quakes.

97:5 The mountains melt like wax at the coming of the Master of the world;

97:6 the heavens proclaim his righteousness, all nations see his glory.

97:7 Shame on those who worship images, who take pride in their idols: bow down as he passes, all you gods!

97:8 Zion hears and rejoices, the daughters of Judah exult at the rulings you utter, Yahweh.

97:9 For you are Yahweh Most High over the world, far transcending all other gods.

97:10 Yahweh loves those who repudiate evil, he guards the souls of the devout, rescuing them from the clutches of the wicked.

97:11 Light dawns for the virtuous, and joy, for upright hearts.

97:12 Rejoice in Yahweh, you virtuous, remember his holiness, and praise him!

Gospel : Mt 6, 7-15

How to pray. The Lord’s Prayer

6:7 In your prayers do not babble as the pagans do, for they think that by using many words they will make themselves heard.

6:8 Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

6:9 So you should pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy,

6:10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

6:11 Give us today our daily bread.

6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us.

6:13 And do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one.

6:14 Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours;

6:15 but if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failings either.
