THURSDAY OF THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading : Sir 48, 1-14
Elijah
48:1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.
48:2 It was he who brought famine on them, and who decimated them in his zeal.
48:3 By the word of the Lord, he shut up the heavens, he also, three times, brought down fire.
48:4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have?-
48:5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol by the word of the Most High;
48:6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;
48:7 hearing reproof on Sinai, and decrees of punishment on Horeb;
48:8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;
48:9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;
48:10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God’s wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts of fathers towards their children,[*a] and to restore the tribes of Jacob,
48:11 Happy shall they be who see you, and those who have fallen asleep in love; for we too will have life.
Elisha
48:12 Elijah was shrouded in the whirlwind, and Elisha was filled with his spirit; throughout his life no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.
48:13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.
48:14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvellous.
Psalm : Ps 96
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just.
Yahweh, king and judge
96:1 Sing Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth!
96:2 Sing to Yahweh, bless his name. Proclaim his salvation day after day,
96:3 tell of his glory among the nations, tell his marvels to every people.
96:4 Yahweh is great, loud must be his praise, he is to be feared beyond all gods.
96:5 Nothingness, all the gods of the nations. Yahweh himself made the heavens,
96:6 in his presence are splendour and majesty, in his sanctuary power and beauty.
96:7 Pay tribute to Yahweh, families of the peoples, tribute to Yahweh of glory and power,
96:8 tribute to Yahweh of his name’s due glory. Bring out the offering, bear it before him,
96:9 worship Yahweh in his sacred court, tremble before him, all the earth!
96:10 Say among the nations, ‘Yahweh is king!’ Firm has he made the world, and unshakeable; he will judge each nation with strict justice.
96:11 Let the heavens be glad, let earth rejoice, let the sea thunder and all that it holds,
96:12 let the fields exult and all that is in them, let all the woodland trees cry out for joy,
96:13 at the presence of Yahweh, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth, to judge the world with justice and the nations with his truth.
Gospel : Mt 6, 7-15
How to pray. The Lord’s Prayer
6:7 In your prayers do not babble as the pagans do, for they think that by using many words they will make themselves heard.
6:8 Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
6:9 So you should pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy,
6:10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
6:11 Give us today our daily bread.
6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us.
6:13 And do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one.
6:14 Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours;
6:15 but if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failings either.
