SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading : 1 Kgs 3, 5. 7-12
3:5 At Gibeon Yahweh appeared in a dream to Solomon during the night. God said, ‘Ask what you would like me to give you’.
3:7 Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king in succession to David my father. But I am a very young man, unskilled in leadership.
3:8 Your servant finds himself in the midst of this people of yours that you have chosen, a people so many its number cannot be counted or reckoned.
3:9 Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil, for who could govern this people of yours that is so great?’
3:10 It pleased Yahweh that Solomon should have asked for this.
3:11 ‘Since you have asked for this’ Yahweh said ‘and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies, but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself,
3:12 here and now I do what you ask. I give you a heart wise and shrewd as none before you has had and none will have after you.

119:1 Ah, how happy those of blameless life who walk in the Law of Yahweh!
119:2 How happy those who respect his decrees, and seek him with their whole heart,

119:4 You yourself have made your precepts known, to be faithfully kept.
119:5 Oh, may my behaviour be constant in keeping your statutes.
119:6 If I concentrate on your every commandment, I can never be put to shame.
119:7 I thank you from an upright heart, schooled in your rules of righteousness.
119:8 I mean to observe your statutes; never abandon me.

119:52 Remembering your rulings in the past, Yahweh, I take comfort.
119:53 Fury grips me when I see the wicked abandoning your Law.
119:54 Where I live in exile, your statutes are psalms for me.
119:55 All night, Yahweh, I remember your name and observe your Law.

Second Reading : Rom 8, 28-30
God has called us to share his glory
8:28 We know that by turning everything to their good God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those that he has ,called according to his purpose.
8:29 They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers.
8:30 He called those he intended for this; those he called he justified, and with those he justified he shared his glory.
Gospel : Mt 13, 44-52
Parables of the treasure and of the pearl
13:44 ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns and buys the field.
13:45 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls;
13:46 when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.
Parable of the dragnet
13:47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds.
13:48 When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use.
13:49 This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just
13:50 to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
Conclusion
13:51 ‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes’.
13:52 And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old’.[*d]
