MONDAY OF THE EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading : Jer 28, 1-17
The dispute with Hananiah
28:1 That same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, a Gibeonite, spoke as follows to Jeremiah in the Temple of Yahweh in the presence of the priests and of all the people.
28:2 ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel, says this, “I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
28:3 In two years’ time I will bring back all the vessels of the Temple of Yahweh which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon carried off from this place and took to Babylon.
28:4 And I will also bring back Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who have gone to Babylon – it is Yahweh who speaks. Yes, I am going to break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”‘
28:5 The prophet Jeremiah then replied to the prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people there in the Temple of Yahweh.
28:6 ‘I hope so’ the prophet Jeremiah said. ‘May Yahweh do so. May he fulfil the words that you have prophesied and bring the vessels of the Temple of Yahweh and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon.
28:7 Listen carefully, however, to this word that I am now going to say for you and all the people to hear:
28:8 From remote times, the prophets who preceded you and me prophesied war, famine and plague for many countries and for great kingdoms;
28:9 but the prophet who prophesies peace can only be recognised as one truly sent by Yahweh when his word comes true.’
28:10 The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it.
28:11 In front of all the people Hananiah then said, ‘Yahweh says this, “This is how, two years hence, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and take it off the necks of all the nations”‘. At this, the prophet Jeremiah went away.
28:12 After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke which he had taken off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah the word of Yahweh was addressed to Jeremiah,
28:13 ‘Go to Hananiah and tell him this, “Yahweh says this: You can break wooden yokes? Right, I will make them iron yokes instead!
28:14 For Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: An iron yoke is what I now lay on the necks of all these nations to subject them to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. (They will be subject to him; I have even given him the wild animals.)”‘
28:15 The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, ‘Listen carefully, Hananiah: Yahweh has not sent you; and thanks to you this people are now relying on what is false.
28:16 Hence – Yahweh says this, “I am going to throw you off the face of the earth: you are going to die this year (since you have preached apostasy from Yahweh)”.’
28:17 The prophet Hananiah died the same year, in the seventh month.
Psalm : Ps 118
R. Teach me, Lord, your decrees.
Alleluia!
118:1 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his love is everlasting!
118:2 Let the House of Israel say it, ‘His love is everlasting!’
118:3 Let the House of Aaron say it, ‘His love is everlasting!’
118:4 Let those who fear Yahweh say it, ‘His love is everlasting!’
118:5 Hard-pressed, I invoked Yahweh, he heard me and came to my relief.
118:6 With Yahweh on my side, I fear nothing: what can man do to me?
118:7 With Yahweh on my side, best help of all, I can triumph over my enemies.
118:8 I would rather take refuge in Yahweh than rely on men;
118:9 I would rather take refuge in Yahweh than rely on princes.
118:10 The pagans were swarming round me, in the name of Yahweh I cut them down;
118:11 they swarmed round me closer and closer, in the name of Yahweh I cut them down;
118:12 they swarmed round me like bees, they blazed like a thorn-fire, in the name of Yahweh I cut them down.
118:13 I was pressed, pressed, about to fall, but Yahweh came to my help;
118:14 Yahweh is my strength and my song, he has been my saviour.
118:15 Shouts of joy and safety in the tents of the virtuous: Yahweh’s right hand is wreaking havoc,
118:16 Yahweh’s right hand is winning, Yahweh’s right hand is wreaking havoc!
118:17 No, I shall not die, I shall live to recite the deeds of Yahweh;
118:18 though Yahweh has punished me often, he has not abandoned me to Death.
118:19 Open the gates of virtue to me, I will come in and give thanks to Yahweh.
118:20 This is Yahweh’s gateway, through which the virtuous may enter.
118:21 I thank you for having heard me, you have been my saviour.
118:22 It was the stone rejected by the builders that proved to be the keystone;
118:23 this is Yahweh’s doing and it is wonderful to see.
118:24 This is the day made memorable by Yahweh, what immense joy for us!
118:25 Please, Yahweh, please save us. Please, Yahweh, please give us prosperity.
118:26 Blessings on him who comes in the name of Yahweh! We bless you from the house of Yahweh.
118:27 Yahweh is God, he smiles on us. With branches in your hands draw up in procession as far as the horns of the altar,
118:28 You are my God, I give you thanks, I extol you, my God; I give you thanks for having heard me, you have been my saviour.
118:29 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, his love is everlasting!
Gospel : Mt 14, 22-36
Jesus walks on the water and, with him, Peter
14:22 Directly after this he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away.
14:23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
14:24 while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind.
14:25 In the fourth watch of the night[*c] he went towards them, walking on the lake,
14:26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear.
14:27 But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’
14:28 lt was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’
14:29 ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water,
14:30 but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried.
14:31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’
14:32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.
14:33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God’.
Cures at Gennesaret
14:34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
14:35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood and took all that were sick to him,
14:36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched it were completely cured.
