WEDNESDAY OF THE TWENTY-EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, feria or SAINT CALLISTUS I, pope and martyr, optional memorial
First Reading : Gal 5, 18-25
5:18 If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you.
5:19 When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: fornication, gross indecency and sexual irresponsibility;
5:20 idolatry and sorcery; feuds and wrangling, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels; disagreements, factions,
5:21 envy; drunkenness, orgies and similar things. I warn you now, as I warned you before: those who behave like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
5:22 What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness,
5:23 gentleness and self-control. There can be no law against things like that, of course.
5:24 You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires.
5:25 Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.
Psalm : Ps 1
R. Whoever follows you, Lord, will have the light of life.
The two ways
1:1 Happy the man who never follows the advice of the wicked, or loiters on the way that sinners take, or sits about with scoffers,
1:2 but finds his pleasure in the Law of Yahweh, and murmurs his law day and night.
1:3 He is like a tree that is planted by water streams, yielding its fruit in season, its leaves never fading;
1:4 It is nothing like this with the wicked, nothing like this! No, these are like chaff blown away by the wind.
1:5 The wicked will not stand firm when Judgement comes, nor sinners when the virtuous assemble.
1:6 For Yahweh takes care of the way the virtuous go, but the way of the wicked is doomed.
Gospel : Lk 11, 42-46
11:42 But alas for you Pharisees! You who pay your tithe of mint and rue and all sorts of garden herbs and overlook justice and the love of God! These you should have practised, without leaving the others undone.
11:43 Alas for you Pharisees who like taking the seats of honour in the synagogues and being greeted obsequiously in the market squares!
11:44 Alas for you, because you are like the unmarked tombs that men walk on without knowing it![*a]
11:45 A lawyer then spoke up. ‘Master,’ he said ‘when you speak like this you insult us too.’
11:46 ‘Alas for you lawyers also,’ he replied ‘because you load on men burdens that are unendurable, burdens that you yourselves do not move a finger to lift.
