SATURDAY. Until None: SAINT IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH, bishop and martyr, obligatory memorial
First Reading : Eph 1, 15-23
The triumph and the supremacy of Christ
1:15 That will explain why I, having once heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus, and the love that you show towards all the saints,
1:16 have never failed to remember you in my prayers and to thank God for you.
1:17 May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of him.
1:18 May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you, what rich glories he has promised the saints will inherit
1:19 and how infinitely great is the power that he has exercised for us believers. This you can tell from the strength of his power
1:20 at work in Christ, when he used it to raise him from the dead and to make him sit at his right hand, in heaven,
1:21 far above every Sovereignty, Authority, Power, or Domination,[*a] or any other name that can be named not only in this age but also in the age to come.
1:22 He has put all things under his feet[*b] and made him, as the ruler of everything, the head of the Church;
1:23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills the whole creation.
Psalm : Ps 8
R. You gave your Son dominion over the works of your hands.
Of David
8:1 Yahweh, our Lord, how great your name throughout the earth! Above the heavens is your majesty chanted
8:2 by the mouths of children, babes in arms. You set your stronghold firm against your foes to subdue enemies and rebels.
8:3 I look up at your heavens, made by your fingers, at the moon and stars you set in place –
8:4 ah, what is man that you should spare a thought for him, the son of man that you should care for him?
8:5 Yet you have made him little less than a god, you have crowned him with glory and splendour,
8:6 made him lord over the work of your bands, set all things under his feet,
8:7 sheep and oxen, all these, yes, wild animals too,
8:8 birds in the air, fish in the sea travelling the paths of the ocean.
8:9 Yahweh, our Lord, how great your name throughout the earth!
Gospel : Lk 12, 8-12
12:8 ‘I tell you, if anyone openly declares himself for me in the presence of men, the Son of Man will declare himself for him in the presence of God’s angels.
12:9 But the man who disowns me in the presence of men will be disowned in the presence of God’s angels.
12:10 ‘Everyone who says a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
12:11 ‘When they take you before synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say,
12:12 because when the time comes, the Holy Spirit will teach you what you must say.’
SATURDAY. After None: Evening Mass of the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading : Isa 45, 1. 4-6
Oracle in favour of Cyrus
45:1 Thus says Yahweh to his anointed, to Cyrus, whom he has taken by his right hand to subdue nations before him and strip the loins of kings,[*a] to force gateways before him that their gates be closed no more:
45:4 It is for the sake of my servant Jacob, of Israel my chosen one, that I have called you by your name, conferring a title though you do not know me.
45:5 I am Yahweh, unrivalled; there is no other God besides me. Though you do not know me, I arm you
45:6 that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that, apart from me, all is nothing.
Psalm : Ps 95
R. Give the Lord glory and power.
Psalm for daily use
95:1 Come, let us praise Yahweh joyfully, acclaiming the Rock of our safety;
95:2 let us come into his presence with thanksgiving, acclaiming him with music.
95:3 For Yahweh is a great God, a greater King than all other gods;
95:4 from depths of earth to mountain top everything comes under his rule;
95:5 the sea belongs to him, he made it, so does the land, he shaped this too.
95:6 Come in, let us bow, prostrate ourselves, and kneel in front of Yahweh our maker,
95:7 for this is our God, and we are the people he pastures, the flock that he guides. If only you would listen to him today,
95:8 ‘Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,[*a]
95:9 when your ancestors challenged me, tested me, although they had seen what I could do.
95:10 ‘For forty years that generation repelled me, until I said: How unreliable these people who refuse to grasp my ways!
95:11 And so, in anger, I swore that not one would reach the place of rest I had for them.’

Gospel : Mt 22, 15-21
On tribute to Caesar
22:15 Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.
22:16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians,[*a] to say, ‘Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you.
22:17 Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’
22:18 But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, ‘You hypocrites! Why do you set this trap for me?
22:19 Let me see the money you pay the tax with.’ They handed him a denarius,
22:20 and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’
22:21 ‘Caesar’s’ they replied. He then said to them, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God’.
