WEDNESDAY. SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO, bishop, obligatory memorial

Ordinary Time Week XXXI White

First Reading : Phil 2, 12-18

Work for salvation

2:12 So then, my dear friends, continue to do as I tell you, as you always have; not only as you did when I was there with you, but even more now that I am no longer there; and work for your salvation ‘in fear and trembling’.

2:13 It is God, for his own loving purpose, who puts both the will and the action into you.

2:14 Do all that has to be done without complaining or arguing

2:15 and then you will be innocent and genuine, perfect children of God among a deceitful and underhand brood,[*c] and you will shine in the world like bright stars

2:16 because you are offering it the word of life. This would give me something to be proud of for the Day of Christ, and would mean that I had not run in the race and exhausted myself for nothing.

2:17 And then, if my blood has to be shed as part of your own sacrifice and offering-which is your faith[*d] I shall still be happy and rejoice with all of you,

2:18 and you must be just as happy and rejoice with me.

Psalm : Ps 26

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Of David

26:1 Yahweh, be my judge! I go my way in my innocence, My trust in Yahweh never wavers.

26:2 Test me, Yahweh, and probe me, put me to the trial, loins and heart;

26:3 for your love is before my eyes, and I live my life in loyalty to you.

26:4 No sitting with wastrels for me, no associating with hypocrites;

26:5 I hate the society of evil men, I refuse to sit down with the wicked.

26:6 I wash my hands in innocence and join the procession round your altar,

26:7 singing a hymn of thanksgiving, proclaiming all your wonders.

26:8 I love the house where you live, the place where your glory makes its home.

26:9 Do not let my soul share the fate of sinners, or my life the doom of men of blood,

26:10 men with guilt on their hands, whose right hands are heavy with bribes.

26:11 But I live my life in innocence, redeem me, Yahweh, take pity on me;

26:12 my foot is set on the right path, I bless you, Yahweh, at the Assemblies.

Gospel : Lk 14, 25-33

Renouncing all that one holds dear

14:25 Great crowds accompanied him on his way and he turned and spoke to them.

14:26 If any man comes to me without hating[*a] his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple.

14:27 Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

Renouncing possessions

14:28 ‘And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it?

14:29 Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, “‘

14:30 Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish”.

14:31 Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand?

14:32 If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace.

14:33 So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.
