SATURDAY. Until None: SATURDAY OF THE THIRTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME or BLESSED VIRGIN MARY ON SATURDAY, optional memorial

Ordinary Time Week XXXI Green

First Reading : Phil 4, 10-19

Thanks for help received

4:10 It is a great joy to me, in the Lord, that at last you have shown some concern for me again; though of course you were concerned before, and only lacked an opportunity.

4:11 I am not talking about shortage of money: I have learnt to manage on whatever I have,

4:12 I know how to be poor and I know how to be rich too. I have been through my initiation and now I am ready for anything anywhere: full stomach or empty stomach, poverty or plenty.

4:13 There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength.

4:14 All the same, it was good of you to share with me in my hardships.

4:15 In the early days of the Good News, as you people of Philippi well know, when I left Macedonia, no other church helped me with gifts of money. You were the only ones;

4:16 and twice since my stay in Thessalonika you have sent me what I needed.

4:17 It is not your gift that I value; what is valuable to me is the interest that is mounting up in your account.

4:18 Now for the time being I have everything that I need and more: I am fully provided now that I have received from Epaphroditus the offering that you sent, a sweet fragrance-the sacrifice that God accepts and finds pleasing.

4:19 In return my God will fulfil all your needs, in Christ Jesus, as lavishly as only God can.

The right use of money

16:9 ‘And so I tell you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity.

16:10 The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great.

16:11 If then you cannot be trusted with money, that tainted thing, who will trust you with genuine riches?

16:12 And if you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own?

16:13 ‘No servant can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.’

Against the Pharisees and their love of money

16:14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and laughed at him.

16:15 He said to them, ‘You are the very ones who pass yourselves off as virtuous in people’s sight, but God knows your hearts. For what is thought highly of by men is loathsome in the sight of God.

SATURDAY. After None: Evening Mass of the Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time Week XXXII Green

First Reading : Wis 6, 12-16

Wisdom sought is Wisdom found

6:12 Wisdom is bright, and does not grow dim. By those who love her she is readily seen, and found by those who look for her.

6:13 Quick to anticipate those who desire her, she makes herself known to them.

6:14 Watch for her early and you will have no trouble; you will find her sitting at your gates.

6:15 Even to think about her is understanding fully grown; be on the alert for her and anxiety will quickly leave you.

6:16 She herself walks about looking for those who are worthy of her and graciously shows herself to them as they go, in every thought of theirs coming to meet them.

Psalm : Ps 62

R. My soul is thirsting for you, Lord my God.

Of David

62:1 In God alone there is rest for my soul, from him comes my safety;

62:2 with him alone for my rock, my safety, my fortress, I can never fall.

62:3 How many times will you come rushing at a man, all of you, to bring him down like a wall already leaning over, like a rampart undermined?

62:4 Deceit their sole intention, their delight is to mislead; with lies on their lips they bless aloud, while cursing inwardly. (pause)

62:5 Rest in God alone, my soul! He is the source of my hope;

62:6 with him alone for my rock, my safety, my fortress, I can never fall;

62:7 rest in God, my safety, my glory, the rock of my strength. In God, I find shelter;

62:8 rely on him people, at all times; unburden your hearts to him, God is a shelter for us (pause)

62:9 Ordinary men are only a puff of wind, important men[*a] delusion; put both in the scales and up they go, lighter than a puff of wind.

62:10 Put no reliance on extortion, no empty hopes in robbery; though riches may increase, keep your heart detached.

62:11 God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: it is for God to be strong, for you,

62:12 Lord, to be loving; and you yourself repay man as his works deserve.

Gospel : Mt 25, 1-13

Parable of the ten bridesmaids

25:1 ‘Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.

25:2 Five of them were foolish and five were sensible:

25:3 the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil,

25:4 whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps.

25:5 The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep.

25:6 But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him.”

25:7 At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps,

25:8 and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out”.

25:9 But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves”.

25:10 They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed.

25:11 The other bridesmaids arrived later. “Lord, Lord,” they said “open the door for us.”

25:12 But he replied, “I tell you solemnly, I do not know you”.

25:13 So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.
